Children learn better when they are willing to failure

Researchers at the University of Poitiers (France) focused on examining the widely held belief that failure is the intellectual inferiority. Being obsessed with success, students are afraid to fail, so they do not want to take the difficult steps to master new material. They do not want to risk it.

The results show that students who receive education, overcoming difficulties, better able to absorb the material. Teachers and parents should emphasize children's progress, rather than focusing solely on estimates.

Learning takes time, and each step in the process should be rewarded, especially in the early stages when the most likely students will pursue failures.

In the first experiment the French schoolchildren aged 11 to 12 years get tricky anagrams that no one could solve. The researchers then talked with the students about the complexity of the problem. One group was told that learning is difficult and failure - this is normal, everything comes with practice. Children of the second group just asked how they tried to solve the problem - they only set up for success.

In the second experiment, the students, who had been told that failure is normal, coped with the task to measure cognitive abilities better. Conclusion: how students perceive the difficulties may be more important than the level of their real abilities.

Researchers say that when the children while learning how to think about the failure of the more important teaching moment, than success, they learn better. The results showed that working memory capacity has been growing only by increasing the confidence of students and reduce their fear of failure. They had low self-esteem.
